I had a wonderfully crazy drivetrain swap idea while I was driving into work and I wanted to share.
Take a 300SL but re- make it in carbon fiber. Essentially a super fancy kit car and swap in the drivetrain from the AMG GT. The kit would be licensed by MB so every dimension matches.
This.
+ this
Should equal all sorts of awesome.
What does Oppo think? What crazy family lineage drivetrain swaps would you do?

I’d rather have it with the new inline 6

Ford GT into Shoebox convertible. .

If you really do have a death wish, strap a H ayabusa engine to a unicycle.
![]() 10/23/2018 at 10:33 |

That would be tough considering the GT is mid-engine. Maybe the GT engine and the Raptor trans?

I’m in.

So what you’re saying is a Mercedes 300 version of the Singer DLS? I also think putting a crazy straight 6 in it would be epic.
![]() 10/23/2018 at 10:57 |

No. Rear mid, because who needs a trunk? The radiator is for-ard anyways, so...

Mercedes already did a restomod, with different engine.

I agree, I wish they would make an AMG 53 wagon with the straight 6, they’d have a 1 in 302 million chance of selling one!

I think this is not quiiiiiite secret. There are pics out there and I think the customer wanted modern rims/wheels for some reason.

I never said it was secret; just that our contact at AMG replied rather eliptically that they “didn’t do that sort of thing... anymore”. A statement that, in itself, was also a lot of hogwash.

Of course not.
Many years ago I saw a couple of

replicas of the 300 SL in, I think, the DuPont Registry magazine. They were fitted with modern MB mechanicals.

True. Pre-internet is a different world. Very cool to talk to a guy like that though I would think.

Unfortunately it was not in person.
And even more unfortunately I only found out not so long ago that early in their careers he had been a manager of sorts for a b r a c e of future F1 world champions.
